Telangana shuts down over quota protest; shops, petrol pump attacked in Hyderabad. Now the reservation issue is hot in Telangana, a statewide bandh has been called in Telangana to demand 42 percent reservation for backward classes. The protest has been called by various organizations representing backward classes and major political parties. The strike called in Telangana had a major impact on the educational institutions and public transport system there. Due to the closure of public transport, commuters suffered badly. The bandh was called on behalf of the Backward Caste Joint Action Committee, which was supported by the ruling Congress, the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samiti and the BJP. Shops and petrol pumps in several major cities, including Hyderabad, were attacked and vandalized by the protesters during the shutdown, causing heavy damage.
